Everything Newfoundland & Labrador with its Culture, Cuisine and Traditions

Toast-in-a-Mug was definitely a part of the NL cuisine back in the day, actually, it is delicious and their are some who still enjoy this little treat today. It was mainly used for the elderly who had difficulty chewing their food and also used as an alternative to baby food when pabulum wasn’t available. The original recipe called for bread being toasted on a wood stove, hot unpasteurized milk and sugar, the combination of these ingredients gave it a much more favorable indulgence. The recipe below is as close as it gets to the original.

Makes 1 serving

  • 1 slice toasted bread (buttered)
  • ½ – 1 cup milk (or tea)
  • 1 tsp white sugar

Cut up toasted bread in med cubes and place in a large mug along with sugar. Pour hot milk or tea (or both) over top and stir. Still excellent today as it was years ago.
